Smart Pill Dispenser

Concept / Overview
Patients or seniors on regular medications faced serious consequences, including increased discomfort, inadequate disease prevention and possibly even death when missing doses, taking incorrect amounts, or taking medicines at the wrong times. So, the proposed system helps to remind patient about which medicines to take with what dosage and the time you need to take it at. Many chronically ill patients are on complicated drug regimens, typically taking more than ten pills a day. Our system makes it easy to manage even such kind of complex medication regimens. Here caregiver can set the timing and dosage according to Doctor’s prescription. So this system will avoid double-dosing or forgetting to take pill by patient.

Introduction

 

Caregiver fills the dispenser system with medicine as per prescription and set the time for medication using UI like mobile App and/or Webapp. According to setting pill dispensers remind the user to take their medications with a series of optional visual and/or auditory alert, which can be customized. Within particular time interval if patient doesn’t take pill then alert will be sent via email and/or text message to Caregiver, so that he/she can make phone call. Pill will be dispensing only when patient pushes button so this confirms that patient has taken dosage. While IR sensor makes sure that pill has been dispensed into provided slots to avoid any failure of system, working like feedback system for Dispensing Mechanism.

This IoT system is connected to cloud for analytics. Record of dosage and follow-ups are maintained on cloud which can be shared with doctor, so that he can also keep track health of patient. Caregiver also gets alert when pill is going to empty, so he/she can pre-order medicine.

System is also provided with RTC module, SD card and battery backup in case of power failure. Routine dosage data will we backup on sdcard and once internet is back then data will be uploaded on cloud.

GR Peach Board

GR-PEACH is the GR reference board for RZ family RZ/A1H group products. Fully pin-compatible with Arduino UNO, GR-PEACH is an ARM® mbed™ enabled development platform. GR-PEACH takes advantage of Web browser-based program development and a robust library selection. 

Grove Buzzer

Used to sound for alarm before dispensing medicine.It has signal pin, VCC and GND.Signal pin is connected to pin 13 of GR Peach board.

 

 

Touch Sensor

Detects the finger touch of person to operate. It also has Signal pin, Vcc and GND. Signal pin connected to pin 8 Of GR Peach.

 

 

Pill dispensing Mechanism

Made using cpu fan and some 3d printed parts and stepper motor

Conclusion

This Smart Pill Dispenser leverage the benefits of IoT to schedule the proper medication of patient and reduce the risk of unplanned hospital or doctor visits related to incorrect medication use. It helps to reduce the risk of accidental over or under dosing when no one is there to help. So maintain independence for patient and peace of mind for caregiver.
